Authority is key to selling anything. Nobody wants to buy from someone they’ve never heard of. After all, whom would you rather buy a slicer dicer from: some no-name you see at your local home show or from a famous chef with her own cooking show? Naturally, most would buy the item from the well-known chef, not from the guy slinging products at a home show.
If you’re selling anything online, chances are, you’re far from famous. However, there are plenty of ways to boost your authority and credibility. When you do, you’ll sell more and make a lot more money.
One way to boost authority is to rank well in the search engines. When a query is typed into Google, or any other search engine, it’s assumed the top 10 listings are there for a reason, especially when there are a few million results found.
Most people who shop online don’t know anything about SEO or backlinks, they just know Google has some mysterious way of presenting results that are important. Ranking well for your keywords is one way to gain instant credibility.
Another way is to have an authority figure offer a testimonial. Don’t know any celebrities or well-known professionals? There’s a method called, “third party authority” you can leverage.
Let’s suppose you are a marketing consultant and you want to market your own services. Someone hires you to help market his book. This particular book is a best-seller on Amazon. This is the perfect person to give you a testimonial — you can refer to him as an “Amazon Ranked Best Selling Author.” Even if nobody has ever heard of them, the credibility and authority from Amazon will spill over onto him and rub off on you.
Another way to gain credibility and authority for yourself is to guest blog as much as possible. Try to get a few posts or articles on some popular sites. If one of you articles appears on the “Huffington Post,” website, for example, this will go a long way to establish authority.
Another way to establish authority that is more subtle, but just as powerful is: show your reader you know everything there is to know about their problem. This makes you appear to be an authority on that particular issue.
For example, let’s say you have a site on dog training. People come to your site because they’ve got a dog they need to train. If you can convince them that you know all the associated problems with having an untrained dog, so much so that they know you speak from experience, then you’ll instantly be seen as an authority on that particular issue.
This works just as well to sell products as if you were the recognized leader on dog training.
When you can combine two or more of these techniques, your sales and profits are sure to increase.
