Simple SEO For 2012
Is it possible that SEO can be simpler than folks are making it? There is such a huge focus on multiple on-page elements, inbound links, link quality, keyword diversity, and so on and so on. But what concerns me is that when folks are optimizing for all these elements, whether they realize it or not, they are really trying to guess what Google or the other search engines are going to value this month. And if 100s of people optimize for Google's current formula, then Google sees that there is an imbalance in search rankings, and once again they change the formula. Then you have to change your on-page optimization elements and your linking campaigns, etc. I laughed when I saw the Penguin updates comments. Folks are saying that Google has restricted the percentage of inbound links that can come with one particular keyword phrase! That is one of the first tell-tale signs that someone is buying links or otherwise to manipulate the search engines! That should have been done years ago! Here's the thing - every update Google does is to try to improve search rankings. So why not ask this question: what does Google really want? You can dig around on their website for content requirements - but the bottom line, I have discovered is this: they want relevant content that their searches want to read. So why not do this: write relevant content searchers want to read, put it online, and get people who want to read that kind of content - to the content to read it? Yes, that sounds simple. It sounds too simple to actually work, doesn't it? And yet, when you do that, you don't have to worry about optimizing for Google. You simply give them what they want - what they have stated they want - and what they are constantly optimizing their own algorithms to get. When you do that, you will automatically be a part of the "good Google." You see, when you are constantly fighting them by trying to beat them, you are warring. So the question is: do you want to go to war, do you want to battle, or do you want to be their "teammate"? I think so many people think that battling is the way to get more traffic from the search engines. But instead, why not just give them what they want? And they don't want you manipulating their algorithms. They want you delivering great content that real people (read: NOT robots) want to read. Give it to them, do it in a reasonable fashion, get reasonable people that want to read what you are writing about, to read your content, measure it by the response rates you get from real people (not robots) and I think you will find you are getting more and more traffic from the search engines.
